Here he is on the ground after he fell:
Here is the nest - notice there is an unhatched egg still there:
Fortunately though, the little bird had a very strong will to live. We carefully put him back in the nest (without touching him directly) and stood watch for his mother to return. This website explains that it isn't harmful to the bird, especially since we did not touch him with our hands. Fortunately the mother bird did return, and she has been sitting in the nest ever since with the unhatched egg as well as the little baby who fell.
Edward, putting him back in the nest:
We don't know if he was hurt at all, but we're hoping that he'll be fine. His mother will care for him, and if he's hurt, she will push him out of the nest as all birds do to their sick or hurt young. I know they're 'only' animals, and it's how God created them, but it just seems so sad.
Here's a video clip of the bird on the ground. You can see him struggling to move. He must have been so scared!
If we notice anything I'll update it here, otherwise, assume all is well and the bird is doing fine. Pool little guy! Can you tell we love birds? After studying them last year in school with Sweet-Pea, our love for birds has only grown. She stood there crying as the bird fell to the ground - we all saw it and it was quite disturbing to see!!

what a great story. That reminds me of one of our own to share with you!
After a thunderstorm several summers ago, our dogs HAD to GO. About 10 minutes later, I noticed our lab, Ginger, holding something in her mouth. I asked her to drop it and she put it in my hands. It was a baby sparrow. I was heartbroken...until I realized it was alive. So I did what I could (I have had birds so I knew what to do)
The next day it was fine. I took it to a vet who knew a release facility and checked on it the next day and it was still fine and already eating again.
It still makes me smile to think that our DOG helped save a little bird's life! :-)
Oh my goodness - so sad!! Let us know if the baby makes it.
